This book is the second book in the trilogy by Judith Kerr.
There is a three-year gap since ‘When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit’, but it follows Anna, Max and their parents as they begin a new life in England. Max has won a scholarship to Cambridge and Anna has discovered her talent for art and in particular, drawing. The family continue to face issues due to being Jews born in Germany. To make matters worse, Anna’s parents are having financial difficulties.
In the first book, as long as Anna and Max were with their parents, they were happy, despite the hardships they were all facing during the war. But in this second book, Anna and Max begin to settle down in England and it is their parents who begin to feel out of place.
The book is aimed at children aged 11 years, so I was a little surprised to read the reference to a sexual relationship between Anna and her art tutor. I do not have children, but I can expect that there have been many awkward conversations and questions between parent and child!
I did not enjoy this book as much as the first one, but I am looking forward to reading the final part of the trilogy.
